How to hike through the seasons

One of the beautiful things about this time of year is how the forest changes from day to day. It’s a fantastic time to be on the trails – falling leaves open up new vistas, delicate frost appears in the morning, only to disappear with the rising sun. Wildlife is on the move – as you hike you’ll encounter deer on the move and see flocks of geese passing by overhead. The season passes quickly. Enjoy the last weeks on the hiking trails before the winter fun begins.

Here are some great places to enjoy a hike in Oneida County.

The Bearskin State Trail, built on the bed of an old railroad, is popular with bikers, but also a nice place for hikers who are looking for flat, even terrain. Hikers aren’t required to obtain a trial pass.

Looking for hills? Loom no further than the Raven Nature Trail, which offers some nice little climbs. The trail is located near Clear Lake, north of Minocqua.

Discover beautiful lakeside scenery on the Shannon Lake Trail near St. Germain. For nice views, take the loop around Shannon Lake.

Your dog might enjoy a trek on the Three Eagle Trail near Three Lakes. Leashed pooches are allowed on the trail during the summer hiking season – in the winter the trail is used for skiing.

Enjoy an easy hike in Hodag Country on thee Newbold Town Trails.  Located just north of Rhinelander, the trails are on packed gravel and smooth road.
