Hazelhurst, a small town nestled in the heart of the Northwoods, is a hidden gem that many travelers have yet to discover. Its serene and peaceful atmosphere, coupled with its picturesque natural beauty, makes it the perfect destination for those seeking a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle.

Like many Northwoods communities, the town of Hazelhurst got its start through the logging industry. In 1887, Cyrus Carpenter Yawkey acquired land around Lake Katherine and started the Yawkey Lumber Company.

The community is well-known for its waterways and woods—notable natural attractions include Upper and Lower Kaubashine Lakes and the Yawkey Forest Preserve. Anglers will find excellent opportunities in the lakes and waterways, including great fishing opportunities on the Willow Flowage. The flowage is one of the state’s most pristine natural areas and provides a true wilderness experience to anglers, paddlers, and boaters.

The iconic Bearskin State Trail passes through Hazelhurst on its 20-mile route from downtown Minocqua to Tomahawk and offers stunning scenery for walkers, runners, and bikers. The trail follows its namesake Bearskin Creek and is constructed on a former railroad bed, so the crushed-gravel route is appropriate for all users.

Winter enthusiasts are sure to enjoy the area’s trails, which offer exciting opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. Hazelhurst’s snowmobile trails connect with routes in the Northwoods and beyond, offering hundreds of miles of winter exploration.

Visitors can choose from family-run resorts, campgrounds, vacation homes, and many other lodging properties that are ready to welcome Northwoods explorers.
