There’s no need to stop biking when the snow flies in Oneida County—in fact, some of the best biking can be found here in the winter, when scenic Northwoods routes open for winter fatbiking. Here’s a look at a few trails you can explore on your next winter biking getaway to northern Wisconsin.
Mud Lake Trails
These single-track and double-track mountain bike trails north of Rhinelander are groomed for fatbking and snowshoeing in the winter. Riders will enjoy a scenic route on gently rolling hills that pass through stands of northern Wisconsin hardwoods, aspen, pine, and cedar. The trails are groomed and maintained by the Rhinelander Area Silent Trails Association (RASTA).
Tara Lila Trails
This trail system in the northeastern part of Oneida County between Sugar Camp and Three Lakes consists of three separate units with more than 20 miles of trails for hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and winter fatbiking. The trails are open to the public and no fee is required. Fatbking trails can be found at the Sundstein Road Unit (650 acres) and the Ripco Road Unit (800 acres).
Enterprise Winter Recreation Trails
This trail system, located near the Enterprise Hemlocks State Natural Area southeast of Rhinelander, is only open for winter recreation and boasts 8 miles of trails that are groomed for fat-tire biking. Riders may have to share the trails, however: cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are permitted, but the trails are not groomed for these activities.
LAMBO Zip Trails
This 6-mile trail system, located on the grounds of Northwoods Zip Line in Minocqua, is suitable for riders of all ages and abilities. The trails are maintained and groomed by the Lakeland Area Mountain Biking Organization (LAMBO).
