Your guide to fall color in northern Wisconsin

Fall is the most scenic season in northern Wisconsin, and Oneida County in the heart of the Northwoods is the perfect place to go to check out the fall color show. Here’s where to go and what you’ll be able to see on your next fall getaway to Oneida County.

Timing

Fall colors vary from year to year depending on a lot of different factors, including weather and climate conditions. Mild days and cool nights above freezing are the best to make the colors pop, but dry or drought conditions can stress trees and make leaves drop earlier.

Peak color in northern Wisconsin is generally the first week in October, but again, conditions can vary from year to year. Generally, it can take a few weeks to a month or more from when colors begin to change to reach peak.

The earliest trees to turn are red maples and sugar maples, which go from green to orange-red. Yellow birches and aspen start changing typically in the middle of fall color season, with oaks holding onto their dark red or brown leaves well into late autumn.
